Cote de Claiborne Velo Challenge

May 5, 2019

Cote de Claiborne Velo Challenge Poster

THE DATE  Sunday, May 5th

THE PLACE  Claiborne and Churchill Winery
                      2649 Carpenter Cyn. Rd.
                      San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

THE TIME  Gates will open at 7:00 am – ride will officially begin at 8:00 though you’re free to jump the gun or start late if you wish. We will have coffee and water at the start.

THE ROUTE Click here to view.
We’ve done many variations over the years, but this popsicle route should be good. Twenty miles of pavement to warmup. Twenty five miles of mostly dirt roads with one single track descent down to Rinconada trailhead and lots of climbing in the middle. Given the amount of rain we’ve had this spring I’m guessing we’ll be doing some water crossing even in May, but nothing crazy. Long descent back to pavement and home. This route also allows those who aren’t up for the entire banquet of pain to turn around at any point before High Mountain Lookout and get a real nice up to 50 mile out and back with one less major climb. There’s water (and other beverages) at Pozo – roughly half way around.

WHAT SORT OF WHIP SHOULD I RIDE?  The perennial question – the short answer is something cyclocross or gravel friendly. But, everything from full squish mountain bikes to straight up road racing rigs have done similar routes in previous editions of the event.

THE MEAL & THE FEE  Pepe – from La Parrilla will be serving lunch beginning at 1:00 or so. Lunch and a glass of wine are included in the entrance fee. So too is a commemorative poster. We will be charging $59.00 for riders, and $26.00 for non-riding guests. We will be donating $20.00 per rider to Bike SLO County.

RIDER NOTES  There are nice picnic grounds at the winery, but no shower - so bring a towel and washcloth.

And, finally the famous question, “Are you riding or are you hiding?”
